Your child’s bedroom should be more than just a place for them to sleep; it’s their safe place, and should be filled with things to fuel their imagination. As they get older, their preferences will change and so they may want to do a little redecorating.
Use this opportunity to work with them to style their room the way they want. That way, you can get the job done quicker and spend some time together. If you’re in need of some ideas though, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of our favourite ideas for decorating a child’s bedroom.
Paint the walls
You may already have a colour scheme for your home but it’s beneficial to let your child choose a colour or theme that reflects their interests. Letting them actively participate in the design can significantly boost their happiness and make them feel connected to the space.
You don’t need to paint the entire room either. It could be as simple as an accent wall as grand as a mural containing their favourite cartoon characters. These personal touches will make their room a special place for many years to come.
Storage solutions
Kids accumulate a lot of stuff, whether it be toys or clothes. To keep all this clutter at bay, invest in some storage solutions such as under-bed containers and ottomans with built-in compartments.
If the room is on the smaller side, a custom-designed fitted wardrobe is ideal, fitting perfectly into the space and offering plentiful storage. You could also change the handles or include a chalkboard on the wardrobe for an added touch.
Create different zones
A child’s bedroom should cater to a variety of activities, including play, sleep, and study. However, these should be kept separate in order for your little one to be able to be wind down and get some good quality sleep at the end of the day.
As an example, you can easily create a cosy reading nook with a comfortable beanbag chair and soft lighting in the corner of the room or beside a bay window. Also, dedicate a space for their desk and school work, ensuring they have a comfortable chair and a desk lamp.
The sleeping area should include relaxing colours, like blue, green, or violet, and blackout curtains to promote relaxation. By separating these different sections, you allow them to be creative while getting the rest they need.
Switch up the lighting
Children loves toys that light up or change colours, so why not make it so that their bedroom does too? Keep the bright overhead lighting playtime but also consider some dimmable bedside lamps for reading at night.
Hang up some fairy lights across the wall or place a star projector on their bedside table to make the area look magic. You could even place some LED strip lights around the edges of the room for some excellent accent lighting. Better still, the colour can be changed using a remote for your child to select one for whatever mood they’re currently feeling.
