What is the adoption process in the UK?

The decision to adopt is not one to be taken lightly and there are many factors to consider. But, adopting a child who’s in need of a caring and loving home can be undeniably rewarding for parents.

If you’re thinking about adoption, it’s important to understand exactly what’s involved. The time from making the decision to adopt to welcoming a child into your home can be lengthy, depending on a variety of factors. While there are many children in the UK in need of a permanent family home, it can take many years to complete the process.

As well as taking the time to understand the different stages, it’s recommended to seek advice from specialist child law solicitors to ensure the legal aspects run smoothly. You can adopt via a local authority or through a volunteer adoption agency

Initial checks

The first stage involves a range of background checks to ensure your suitability as an adoptive parent (or parents). These usually include police checks, a DBS check, references and a health assessment. The relevant adoption agency will then assess your application and make a recommendation on whether you can proceed to the next stage. This initial stage normally takes around two months, depending on how quickly the checks come through.

Training and assessment

The next stage is a thorough assessment which also includes preparation and training. You’ll be allocated a social worker who will assess you at a variety of home visits and write a report based on their recommendations.

During this stage you’ll discuss your reasons for wanting to adopt as well as your current family situation, experience with children and your wider support network. You’ll also explore age ranges, gender, background and the needs of the child you might want to consider adopting.

The training sessions are there to help prepare you for welcoming a child into your home so it’s a good opportunity to ask questions and learn as much as possible to ensure you’re ready. You’ll complete the training with other potential adoptive parents and will also have the opportunity to speak to those who have already adopted.

Final decision

The adoption panel will meet to consider your suitability and make a final decision. If you’re approved, the process of matching you with a child will begin. Depending on the age of the child you wish to adopt, this can take a few months or even years.

Welcoming a child into your home

Before your child moves in permanently, you’ll have multiple visits to begin building a relationship. These will be supervised at first, usually alongside your social worker. Eventually, you’ll be able to provide a permanent home for your child and apply to be their legal parent or parents.

Although it might seem that the adoption process is complex and lengthy, each stage is there to ensure the best eventual match for both you and the child. It also gives you time to make sure that adoption is the right route for you and to fully prepare for the challenging yet rewarding job of being an adoptive parent.
