‘Wonder’, by RJ Palacio, is a book about a boy who was born with a face disfigurement. He is going to middle school after being home-schooled all his life. August will deal with bullies but have friends by his side.

The main characters are; August, his friend Jack Will, ‘Via’ – short for Olivia, (August’s sister), Summer (August’s other friend), Justin (Via’s boyfriend)and Miranda (Via’s friend.) I liked Via because she wasn’t mean to August in any way and she wasn’t ashamed of him. I also liked Summer because she hadn’t been told to be friends with August she did it because she wanted to. All of the main characters see that August is a truly nice kid.

It was something new compared to other books I read, in a good way. ‘Be kind whenever and wherever you can’ was the message I got from the book. This book made me look at humans a whole different way. Another thing I thought after reading the book was it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, what matters is on the inside.

I think the themes of the book are; bravery, kindness, determination and acceptance. I think the book was very well written. I especially loved how at the start of each part the author wrote an inspirational message and you could see the world through other peoples eyes.

Overall I think it was a great book! I’d love to know if you have read it, and what your thoughts are in the comments below.
