Boiler Checks
If you haven’t done so already, this is something which should generally be completed prior to the winter months kicking in and taking hold. Boiler checks should be completed annually, to ensure that your combi boiler is in full working order. You don’t want to be caught out with no hot water at bath time! Not only this, but an annual boiler check ensures that the boiler is not defective, so there is minimal risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to you and your family. Contacting an engineer from a local business to assess your boiler and any necessary work is the best way to tackle this job. In line with government guidelines, engineers are still able to conduct these checks, with appropriate social distancing and PPE at all times.
Radiators
A job that is sometimes forgotten about, and something which can be difficult to spot if you’re uncertain what to look for, bleeding radiators. You will know when radiators need bleeding, as the top of the radiator is cooler than the bottom, or when the radiator is not warm at all even with the heating on. Bleeding radiators saves you money while utilising your heating as best as possible. You can complete this job in a quick and easy way, starting with the radiators furthest away from your boiler. However, if you are finding yourself in the situation where you cannot do them yourself, or need some assistance, contact a local boiler servicer who will be more than happy to assist you.
Guttering
Sometimes a job that is overlooked, but is important, nonetheless. As the leaves fall off the trees, they are known to get stuck and clog up the drains and guttering on properties. Ensuring that the guttering stays clear as we head into the winter months is vital; as leaves get stuck, they absorb excess moisture, which ends up in the structural foundation of your home, causing rot and other issues. As the colder weather sets in, there is the risk that these heavy guttering’s can collapse. Climbing up a ladder and cleaning out those gutters isn’t really a job that you want to do with children in tow, that’s for sure! If you are having any types of problems with your drains and are unsure how to tackle them, contact a local drain company. Make sure they provide services round the clock, so you can rest easy that any blockages will be cleared in a quick and professional way no matter the time of day.
Heating
Naturally, as the months pass by and the temperature drops, we have the heating on a bit more. I think we can all agree that the prospect of having no heating in the winter is any mum’s worst nightmare! Burst pipes happen when water that is within the pipes freezes, which expands and subsequently, cracks the pipe. As the weather heats up, the water thaws and as a result floods the property. Protect your property against this type of incident, especially if you are going to be away from your property for 48 hours or more. If this is the case, leaving your heating on between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius will ensure that there is some heat going through the pipes, preventing the risk of frozen pipes. This also means you will have a heated home to come back to!
Windows
These little blighters are our saviour in the warmer months, but rascals in the winter. Before the cold weather really sets in, have a look around your house to make sure that all windows are shut; lock them if need be. Ensuring that all windows are shut will help to contain heat in your home. No one likes a cold home in winter! While assessing the windows for any damage, make certain to check the sealing on the windows in your home. This sealing will protect against any draughts or moisture from getting into your home, so needs to be checked regularly. If you find any issues with the sealings around windows and doors in your home, either purchase the necessary resources needed to fix the sealing or contact a local tradesman who will be able to fill them in for you. Not only will the sealings be preventing the outdoor weather from entering your home but will also be saving you money. What more could you want?
